By vehicle to Poland

By vehicle to Poland

In our series “With the vehicle to…” in this article we deal with the eastern neighbor of our beautiful Saxony, with the Republic of Poland. A lot of Germans travel by vehicle to Poland, but we are not interested in the local border traffic for shopping, but in holiday trips with our neighbors.

Scenically, Poland is very diverse. In addition to cities with history, you can cool off in the north of the country in the Baltic Sea. In the south of the country you can climb the granite rocks of the High Tatras – over 70 2000m are waiting to be climbed.

If you travel to Poland by car, you can pitch your tent or stretch your hammock between the trees in 1 May 2021 in 425 designated areas – romantics like to talk about wild camping in Poland. Please note the strict regulations that apply to the protection of nature.

The traffic rules in Poland

Of the 382,000 km road network, just over 1,300 km are motorways and another 1,050 km are expressways.

If you travel to Poland by vehicle, different traffic rules apply in some areas than in Germany. Depending on the time of day, there are different speed limits in the city.

  • Speed limit in urban areas(between 5:00 and 23:00):50 km/h
  • Speed limit in urban areas(between 23:00 and 5:00):60 km/h
  • Speed limit extra-urban: 90 km/h
  • Speed limit motorway: 130 km/h
  • Speed limit with trailer: 80 km/h

In addition to these rules, other rules apply that we do not know from Germany (unfortunately). So the dipped headlight must be on, even during the day. When a bus arrives, it has the right of way and at intersections trams always have the right of way.

While in Germany “only” a warning triangle in the car is mandatory, in Poland you also have to carry a fire extinguisher.

If you are traveling with a foreign vehicle in Poland, you need, in addition to your driver’s license and the vehicle documents, a power of attorney from the owner that you may use the car. An informal letter is sufficient.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol should be taboo for everyone. If you are caught with a blood alcohol content of more than 0.2 per thousand, this can be punished with fines and even imprisonment of up to two years. Our recommendation: 0.0 per thousand!
